The present invention relates to improved processes for the regeneration of catalysts. More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for regenerating catalysts that catalyze the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to form carbonates.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Carbon dioxide is a by-product of many industrial processes, including, for example, the production of acid from sulfuric acid, and the production of chemical feedstocks from fossil fuels and organic waste. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and its environmental impacts are becoming increasingly undesirable.
Various technologies have been explored for the recovery of carbon dioxide. One method is to use the gas for the production of a valuable organic compound such as methanol or dimethyl ether. For example, H. R. McHardy, in "Chemical Refining and Conversion of Carbon Dioxide", McGraw-Hill, Inc., 1994, pp. 223-223, describes the production of methanol via catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to form a methanol-carbon monoxide mixture, followed by separation and purification of the methanol.
Another method for carbon dioxide recovery is to use the gas for the production of a valuable chemical compound such as urea, oxalic acid, or diaminomethane. For example, V. G. Veeramani and M. D. Kulkarni, "Production of Urea and Oxalic Acid from Carbon Dioxide", Chem. Eng ac619d1d87
